Amelie Daems’s feet. 14th September, 2012. Zutendaal, Belgium.

1. What does it mean to travel from London to Belgium to cross paths with a pair of feet that have walked as far as I have come by train? To see footmarks, landmarked skin, story-soles puffed up with the left-right left-right of the field-told, field-touched? Each step a page turned over, a furrow through the over-there, furrowing these pins like a forehead. Taking lasts of terrain with the body.

2. Press your feet into earth until they map. Amelie’s feet have recorded their routes, the right foot impressed with her zig-zag crossing of Belgium, the left a veined convergence on destination, tunnelling into finish-lines, borders, the removal of second skins.

3. Amelie talks of “The questions I belong to”, each footfall impressing them, driving them forwards and in. If each foot is a question, Amelie’s show evidence of Abduction (movement away from the saggital plane, seen here in the big toes turned away from the centre of her body), field-writing, field-doubt walked right through in a transversal passage from one side of a page (map, sentence, territory) to the other (code, sign, term).

4. Four weeks of walking leave a foil on the sole, tracks to catch up on the journey just made. Grids, contorted boxes, cross-hatchings; knots of repeated pressure, sweat and balancing (walking as a continued attempt to refrain from falling). Toes bunched up, repeatedly curled into or against contours and sleights of land. A heelprint’s finely striated, bonded reply to ground. The body’s isobaric chart tucked out of sight.

5. Dorsiflexive and plantarflexive movements pulse through the transverse plane of feet (their neutral, standing position), generating rhythms, tensions and distances from the tibia. Pathfinders oscillate with homing-signals, stretching and returning between distance and rest. The foot as both mobile adaptor and rigid lever. These migrations the body makes begin in it.

6. Eversions and inversions of the feet (into and away from the midline of the body) pattern ground with them. Walking, crossing is about getting landed again, a walk made by lining, not with flightpaths but somagraphs, paraglyphs. Past bones, fur, wings, nettles, houses, roads, waysides, trees.

7. Feet take and make linguistic trails, word-paths, signways. Ungluing, peeling back, separating terms even while feet step, however momentarily, into them. Each print identifying a border, each footfall a tiny ritual, temporal brake, event connecting body, place and question.

8. Walking is a Fort-Da with the ground, as well as an extra-bodily relationship with passage, distance and land. And a ligamented, rolling fold through crossroads and border-desires, transecting place with a timed and timeless practice that plots, changes, drifts course. It braids and upbraids, place folding to body, body to place, body both resistant and giving to skins and scalps of place, treading through our memories of it.

9. The land’s footholds on the body; performance scars. Ground-in-ground, soft incisions of flattened flora, temporary fossils pressed into sole-flesh. Body dipped in land-fat.

10. The land-printed and printing foot: printed on land in the form of the path and by it, in blademarks, field-cilia, courses/runs in the moving body. Amelie Daems’s feet.
